Is your pet missing? |

When a pet goes
missing it can be very upsetting. Whether they have escaped from
your home or were taken from your yard, time is critical and information
about your pet and your contact information should be provided to as many
people as possible. Most people are willing to help you if they know
what to look for and how to contact you.
Ten Smart Steps To Take If
You Lose Your Pet
-
Be Available. If you do not have an answering machine make sure you
have alternate phone numbers where someone can be reached or leave a
message and be sure to return calls promptly. Some calls may just be
a sighting of your pet and could be time critical.
-
Call area shelters and humane societies. Provide them with
descriptive information about your pet and multiple contact numbers where
they can contact you if they find your pet.
-
Use the Internet! There are many places on the internet to
post information about your lost pet. If the site allows for
pictures, definitely post your pets picture. Places like Kinko's
usually have scanners you can use to scan pictures into a digital format
you can use to upload to a web site. It has been said often - a
picture is worth a thousand words!

-
Make Flyers with a photograph. Use large print for the
breed/description and your contact number so it can be seen from a
distance. Post flyers, if allowed, around the area. Create
multiple flyers and roll up and use a rubber band to place on door knobs.
Provide flyers to businesses, postal workers, package delivery workers,
etc. If you believe your dog may have been stolen, provide flyers to
all local police stations.
-
Place ads. Some local papers will provide free space for lost
pets, if possible provide a photograph.
-
Walk the area. Walk the area where your pet went missing,
call his or her name - call out the name you use for their treats (e.g.,
treat, snackie, bo bo, chewie) because their favorite snack can be a
powerful tool. While you walk the area make sure you hand out flyers
if you have them made up already.
-
Drive the area. Driving through the area where they went
missing in the daytime and night, asking anyone you see if they have seen
your dog - show them a picture or flyer.
-
Think like your pet. Nobody knows your pet better than you.
Do they have a favorite place they like to go? Do they like to swim and
there is a pond nearby? Do they love kids and there is a park nearby?
Check out all the places you think your dog might go.
-
Leave the gate open. If you have a fenced yard, leave your
gate open if possible. Often when your pet gets tired they will head
home and might be discouraged if they cannot get into their yard.
-
Don't give up.
Keep looking for your pet no matter how much time has passed. If you
were lost wouldn't you want someone to continue to look for you?
Check back with the shelters often, recheck the internet for found pets,
check the newspapers everyday for found pets
